# Managing the Chat

Customize your chat settings to help keep conversations flowing during your live streams.

## **Chat Modes**

Control how chat messages are displayed and how quickly viewers can send messages.

### **Emoticon-Only Mode**

In Emoticon-Only Mode, viewers can only send messages containing emotes.

### **Slow Mode**

Slow Mode limits how frequently viewers can send chat messages.

* You can set a cooldown period between messages.
* Donation messages and subscription messages can be sent regardless of the cooldown setting.
* Streamers, channel owners, and chat moderators can send messages without restrictions.

## **Chat Participation Settings**

Control who can participate in chat.

| Setting     | Description                                          |
| ----------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| Everyone    | All viewers can participate in chat                  |
| Followers   | Only viewers following the channel can participate   |
| Subscribers | Only active subscribers can participate              |
| Moderators  | Only moderators and channel managers can participate |

### **Followers-Only-Chat**

Only followers can participate in chat.

* Viewers may be required to follow the channel for a specified period of time before chatting.
* Enable Allow chat immediately after subscribing to let viewers participate in chat as soon as they follow the channel.

### **Subscribers-Only Chat**

Only active subscribers can participate in chat.

### **Moderators-Only Chat**

Only channel moderators, channel managers, and the channel owner can participate in chat.

## **Chat Rules**

Set **chat rules and guidelines** for viewers before they participate in chat.

Viewers will be asked to review and agree to the chat rules before sending their first message.

## **Blocked Words**

Block messages containing specific words or phrases.

The following character types are supported when creating blocked words:

* Korean
* English
* Numbers
* Spaces

#### **Frequently Asked Questions**

<summary><strong>Q. Can I block users who spam chat?</strong></summary>

Yes. Click on a user in chat and select "Ban" to remove them from your channel.

Banned users can still watch your content, but they will no longer be able to participate in chat or send donations.
